I am struck by the wealth of examples. On the newsstands we see the movie "Men in Black" as the cover story of Newsweek the week U.S. welfare ends and Hong Kong becomes part of China. Behind the scenes, book publishing in the U.S. is now dominated by eight huge media conglomerates, and The Nation reports that these organizations expect their book divisions to show profits of 12 to 15 percent, more than a tripling of previous industry levels. [See March 17, "The Crushing Power of Big Publishing" and http://www.thenation.com/extra/publish/map1.htm--the conglomerates are Hearst, News Corporation, Pearson PLC, Viacom, Advance Publications, Bertelsmann AG, Holtzbrinck, and Time Warner]
